The flagship store, which opened today at Cheshire Oaks, was described as the 'best M ever' by bosses who said it was only fitting that it should be located in the north west, the region where the company opened burberry products its first shop in Manchester in 1894. Dutch chief executive Marc Bolland said the project was the culmination of his vision to create a 'multi channel' store using the latest technology, including sales assistants equipped with iPads to help customers search for items or place orders. But it is the green credentials of the store that the top brass were most proud to trumpet last night, with Bolland sporting a Savile Row inspired suit made from 100 per cent recycled materials which naturally is on sale at the store. 'Plan A director' Richard Gillies, the retailer's environment supremo, said stores like Cheshire Oaks would not come at the expense of the embattled high street amid fears that M closures would deal a hammer blow to beleaguered town centres. Moves to shut branches in towns like Rhyl, where the retailer has had a presence for 80 years, have resulted in a groundswell of local opposition. we fully realise how important our presence is to town centres." The vast 148,000 sq ft store boasts the biggest M home department in the UK and one of the largest M food halls in the world. A catchment customer base of 1.3m shoppers will hail predominantly from Manchester, Liverpool and Cheshire. Bolland, who came under fire after M posted its worst non food sales figures in over three years, last month, said issues of stock and delivery had been addressed and that the retailer was responding clearly to customer demands for stores that are easily navigable. But despite championing the 'greenest M store in the UK' including the use of carbon absorbing hemp panels, most Greater Manchester shoppers will use a car as there is no direct public transport route.
